21 Day Lower Dolpo Trek

Trekking in one of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots, encounter a unique blend of Tibetan and Hindu culture, enthralling mountains and lakes. Discover the alluring charm of this remote region in western Nepal that has captivated the imagination of writers and filmmakers… When you trek in Dolpo, you might feel like you walked into a movie set – only, the picturesque cinematic landscape lies in the little-explored western region of Nepal behind the Dhaulagiri mountain range. In fact, Dolpo’s Tarap and Phoksundo Lake were the shooting locations for Eric Vialli’s charming movie ‘Himalaya’ about Tibetan salt traders, depicting the lifestyle and story of survival and enduring traditions of the Dolpopas in their harsh mountain environment.

Dolpo was also the inspiration and subject for Peter Matthiessen’s book ‘The Snow Leopard’ which chronicles his journey through Dolpo. The endangered and elusive snow leopards inhabit the upper reaches of this region as do a variety of fauna such as snow pigeons, Himalayan griffons, Nepal’s national bird the Impheyan Pheasant, and blue sheep. If you are an avid adventure and nature-lover, Dolpo will be an outdoor wonderland – encounters with wildlife along trails festooned with Himalayan orchids, edelweiss, corydalis, camapunlas, anemones and a variety of other flora unique to this region welcome you while you descend through rocky valleys and ascend dramatic mountain passes to the Baga La Base Camp and the turquoise waters of the Phoksundo Lake.
