Western Region Trek

The region accounts for about 68% of the total land area. It is formed by the Mahabharat range that soars up to 4,877m and lower churia range. Most trekking destinations west of the Annapurna Region were closed till only recently, and belong to the most remote, untouched places in the world. The Nepalese government aims at regulating tourism in areas such as Dolpo, Jumla and Mustang by allowing only limited numbers of groups, each of which need to carry all necessities. Most routes follow ancient caravan trails, which cut through deep mountain gorges, cross windy passes, and descend down into the green forests of the Terai. This remote, rugged land of elevated open valleys, long rides, temperate forest, alpine meadows and virgin rivers was one of the kingdoms of the Khasa Mallas in the 14 th Century.

The region still holds the remnants of the bygone era, and one can find sculptured temples, stone pillars and carving. Rafting down the Bheri, one of the major tributaries of the Karnali river, is certainly a most exhilarating experience viewing the river Dolphins. The area has seldom been visited by westerners and the flow of water and drop of elevation is much faster and steeper than on the Trishuli and Sun Koshi rivers. The ultimate conclusion of the trip, to Karnali Tented Camp inside the Bardia National Park, is the highlight of this fascinating adventure.
